Eric J. Wright
Designated Federal Officer

Eric J. Wright serves as the Designated Federal Officer (DFO) of the Veterans’ Advisory Board on Dose Reconstruction (VBDR), for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Fort Belvoir, Va.. As the DFO, he is responsible for approving all agendas, attending all meetings of the Committee (or designate an alternate in writing to do so) and adjourning all meetings. He is also responsible for the management and compliance of the Committee within the public law.
Wright is a retired United States Navy Captain, having served almost 29 years active duty onboard three different submarines and in the Oceanography community. During his time in the Navy, he initially served aboard the USS Ethan Allan (SSBN 608B), deploying from Apra Harbor, Guam, for four strategic deterrent patrols. From 1980 to 1982, he was the assistant strategic operations officer for Submarine Forces, Pacific Fleet, making one emergent patrol in the USS George Washington (SSBN 598G). He then served as the weapons officer for six nuclear deterrent patrols on the USS Von Steuben (SSBN 632G) deploying from Kings Bay, Ga. Following graduation from the Naval Postgraduate School, he assumed command of Oceanographic Unit Three onboard the USNS Hess (T-AGS-38), and conducted independent oceanographic survey operations in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, for 17 months. His next assignment was as the Staff Oceanographer, Submarine Bi-lateral Exercise and Senior Watch Officer for the Submarine Group Seven, Yokosuka, Japan.
Following graduation from the Naval War College, he assumed duties as a staff officer and Meteorologist/Oceanographer in the J3 Operations Directorate at the U.S. Pacific Command. He participated in the PACOM Crisis Action Teams for the Cobra Gold, Tempest Express and Ulchi Focus Lens exercises, as well as real world operations stood up for the China - Taiwan crisis of 1996, the collapse of the Cambodian government in 1997, and the recovery efforts on the island of Guam after Typhoon Paka. Upon completion of this assignment, he assumed the major command of the U.S. Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Center, Yokosuka, Japan, providing direct support to Commander Seventh Fleet and Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Japan until December 2000. Wright completed a three year tour in the Operations Directorate of the International Military Staff at NATO Headquarters, Brussels, Belgium, as an Operations staff officer and the Military Committee’s meteorologist and oceanographer.
His last assignment was as the Deputy Director of the Congressional Strategic Exercise Division at the National Defense University, where he conducted strategic policy games involving bioterrorism and potential regional conflicts for the Senate and House of Representatives for 18 months.
Wright is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy (Chemistry). He also holds a Master’s degree in Meteorology and Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. In August of 2006 he was recognized by the Science Spectrum Magazine as a “Trailblazer for Minorities in Research Science,” for his career contributions in the science and engineering fields. Additionally in February of 2007 he was selected as the only Department of Defense Brookings Institute Legislative Fellow.
